If you’re looking for parks and playgrounds around Cave Creek, you have to loosen the town boundaries a little bit.
Cave Creek itself has more trailheads, horses and open desert than traditional neighborhood parks, but once you include Carefree, Tatum Ranch and the very northern edge of Scottsdale, there are some really good places to take kids.
And after reaching the stage of parenthood where I spend a truly impressive amount of time evaluating playground shade structures, I definitely have favorites.
Some are better for toddlers. Some give you enough room to properly run the kids out. One has a Gila monster slide. Another has a giant scorpion. And a few let you sneak in a little desert walk at the same time.

CAREFREE
Carefree Desert Gardens & Gila Monster Playground

This is one of my favorites, especially with younger kids.
The playground itself is really small and intimate, which I actually love when you have little ones who are just learning to climb around independently. It’s easy to keep an eye on everyone, the kids inevitably become obsessed with the Gila monster slide, and it’s one of those places where you tend to end up talking with other parents while everyone plays.
The surrounding Carefree Desert Gardens have paths for strolling, and the Kiwanis splash pad is right there for warmer days. The whole thing sits in the middle of Carefree’s little town center, so you can grab a coffee in the morning and actually sit with it while the kids play. A small luxury.
MADISON’S NOTE
The bathroom is a little bit of a walk from the playground, which is worth knowing with small kids. There’s also slow-moving traffic coming and going around the nearby post office. It isn’t a busy road by normal standards, but if you have a runner, this is one where I’d stay pretty close.
Best for: Toddlers and younger kids, coffee + playground mornings, splash-pad weather.
CAVE CREEK
Desert Awareness Park

If you want something quieter, this is probably my pick.
Desert Awareness Park is almost always peaceful when we’re there, and it still has actual swings, which somehow feels worth mentioning because not every playground does anymore.
It can be a little dusty, but there’s really good shade and the bathrooms are right at the park. The playground overlooks a desert wash, there are horses nearby, and the setting is honestly one of the prettiest of any playground around here.
There are also two short self-guided desert trails through the park, so if the kids get bored with the playground, you can wander for a bit instead.
MADISON’S NOTE
This one feels very Cave Creek to me. It isn’t a giant manicured park. You have desert, dust, horses, a wash, swings and some beautiful views. I really like that about it.
Best for: Quieter mornings, shade, swings and kids who like mixing playground time with a little exploring.
NORTH SCOTTSDALE
Ashler Hills Park
32220 N 74th Way, Scottsdale, AZ 85266
Official City of Scottsdale information →
Ashler Hills is one of the newer parks up here, opening in 2025, and it has quickly become one of our favorites.
It’s tucked back behind Target and there is no shortage of things to do. There are two playground areas for different ages, large grassy areas, picnic tables, basketball courts, eight pickleball courts and both paved walking paths and desert trails.
It also has one of the best playground shade structures I’ve found around here. It makes midday play much more manageable and, randomly enough for Arizona, it’s also really nice when we get one of those occasional rainy days.
The bathrooms are close to the playground and have always been very clean when we’ve gone. I also like that the park is set pretty far back from the road, so you don’t have cars constantly moving alongside the play area.
MADISON’S NOTE
One thing to watch: there’s a grouping of giant rocks and saguaros right next to the playground area. Rubin has learned the hard way that this is not an ideal place to end a bike ride. If your kids are biking or scootering around, keep an eye on that corner.
Best for: An all-around park day, multiple ages, midday play, picnics, bikes and scooters, or families with older kids who want courts too.
CAVE CREEK
Cave Creek Regional Park Playground

We don’t make it to this one quite as often because it’s a little more out of the way for us, but it might have the most Arizona playground of the group.
The playground has desert-themed equipment, including saguaro swings and a giant scorpion slide, and my kids really seem to love it.
The scenery is beautiful, too. Cave Creek Regional Park has miles of Sonoran Desert around it, so this is the one I’d choose when I want the outing to be about more than just a playground.
Do a little walk or short hike, let the kids climb around, and you get some actual desert time without asking small children to spend the entire morning hiking.
MADISON’S NOTE
I think of this as a hike + playground park rather than somewhere we’d pop into for 30 minutes. If you want the kids to experience the desert and still give them a playground payoff, this is a really good one.
Best for: A little hike and playground time together, desert scenery and very Arizona photo ops.
TATUM RANCH
Desert Willow Park
4040 E Desert Willow Parkway W, Cave Creek, AZ 85331
Desert Willow is the park I’d pick when the real objective is simply: please go run.
There are multiple play and picnic areas, plus huge grassy fields that are great for kicking a ball around, flying a kite or letting kids burn through whatever astonishing amount of energy they woke up with that morning.
There are bathrooms, and the park is nicely set back from the road. It’s also a popular spot for local soccer groups, so weekends can get busy depending on what’s going on.
MADISON’S NOTE
Check the grass before everyone goes rolling around in it. We occasionally get those tiny burrs here that attach themselves to socks, shoes and apparently every piece of clothing you own. Otherwise, this is a really easy park when you just want space.
Best for: Big grassy areas, kites, running, soccer and kids with energy to burn.
IF YOU’RE TRYING TO PICK ONE
Which Cave Creek-area playground should you go to?
For toddlers: Carefree Desert Gardens. It’s small, manageable and the Gila monster is hard to beat.
For shade: Ashler Hills or Desert Awareness Park.
For a quieter playground: Desert Awareness Park.
For lots of room to run: Desert Willow Park.
For a playground plus a little desert adventure: Cave Creek Regional Park.
For a splash pad: Carefree Desert Gardens on warmer days.
For multiple ages: Ashler Hills. Between the separate playground areas, grass, paths and sports courts, there’s enough going on to keep a pretty wide age range entertained.
MADISON’S NOTE
I’m intentionally keeping this list to the parks we actually use. There are more playgrounds scattered around the greater Cave Creek area, but I’d rather tell you about five places I know than give you a list of fifteen pulled from Google Maps.
A FEW PRACTICAL QUESTIONS
FAQs about parks and playgrounds around Cave Creek
What is the best playground near Cave Creek for toddlers?
Carefree Desert Gardens is one of my favorites for younger kids because the playground is small and easy to manage. The Gila monster slide is a hit, and you also have strolling paths and the splash pad nearby.
Which Cave Creek-area park has the best shade?
Ashler Hills Park has one of my favorite large playground shade structures, while Desert Awareness Park also has excellent tree and structure shade. Both are good choices when you don’t want to feel completely exposed to the Arizona sun.
Is there a splash pad near Cave Creek?
Yes. The Kiwanis Splash Pad is in the Carefree Desert Gardens next to the Gila monster playground in downtown Carefree. It makes that area especially good for warmer-weather outings.
Which park near Cave Creek is best for hiking with kids?
Cave Creek Regional Park is my favorite if you want to combine a short desert walk with playground time. Desert Awareness Park also has two short self-guided trails directly beside its playground.
Are these parks actually in Cave Creek?
Not all of them. This guide is intentionally Cave Creek-adjacent rather than limited by municipal boundaries. Desert Awareness Park is operated by the Town of Cave Creek, Cave Creek Regional Park is a Maricopa County park, Ashler Hills is in northern Scottsdale, Carefree Desert Gardens is in Carefree, and Desert Willow is a City of Phoenix park with a Cave Creek mailing address.
LIVING AROUND CAVE CREEK
Looking for the little details?
I live here, raise my kids here and work with people moving throughout Cave Creek, Paradise Valley and Scottsdale. I’m always happy to talk about the bigger real estate questions, but I also think things like your favorite playground, coffee run and Saturday morning routine tell you a lot about whether an area actually feels like home.
